Neuropathy and Sleep: Ships in the Night

March 26, 2019

If you are one of the 20 Million (+) Americans who suffer with Neuropathy, you are likely very familiar with its negative impact on your sleep. Neuropathy is a progressive nerve disease that usually affects the hands and feet, and eventually works its way into your core and your digestive system. If left untreated, Neuropathy will continue to progress into other areas of the body.

Because most people experience symptoms in their hands or feet, those warning signs are what keep them up at night. These symptoms can include:

  • Burning
  • Tingling
  • Sensitivity
  • Itching
  • Sharp Pain
  • Electric Pain
  • “Fuzzy” Dull Pain
  • Freezing Cold Toes
  • Burning Hot Toes

These symptoms seem to intensify at night because you are still and not distracted with the normal aspects of your day. We’ve heard many late-night remedies from patients over the years to try and combat the relentless burning pain in their feet. Soaking them in cold water, propping them up, taking a pain pill at 1 am… all providing very little and temporary relief from Neuropathy pain. This song and dance night after night gets old very quickly and can cause extreme fatigue and exhaustion into the next day. That’s why we say that Neuropathy and Sleep are like ships in the night – you want to rest while your nerves feel as if they are on fire! It can be hard for those around us to understand why those suffering with this disease are so hopeless. It doesn’t take many consecutive sleepless nights to drive a person mad!

Until recently, many doctors thought this disease only affected Diabetics. After nearly 70 years of research on this disease across the globe, it became evident that there are nearly 100 possible causes of nerve damage. (Check out more of our blogs for a list of causes) Now that we know there are so many causes, we can properly treat this condition in a way that didn’t seem possible 15 years ago – through restorative therapy. Much like your body heals itself after a burn or a cut, our nerves are prepared to heal and are surprisingly resilient! Our youngest patient with Neuropathy was just 14 years old. His nerve damage was caused by an injury he received years before while playing sports. Our most mature patient was 94 years old when we treated her. She had nerve damage from alcoholism in her younger days. She is still kicking and doing better than ever to this day!

It just goes to show you that nerve damage and Neuropathy are not a death sentence, nor are they something that you will have to suffer with forever! It’s all about taking the right steps to get that nerve health back. Your body does the rest, just like it heals cuts and scrapes. Now looping back to how sleep and Neuropathy are ships in the night, 80% of our patients reported better sleep after just 2 weeks of treatment. Imagine getting a good night’s sleep for the first time in years, and then not having pain when you touch your feet to the floor in the morning. It’s not just a dream, it’s a reality if you are on of our incredible patients! If you or a loved one is experiencing sleepless nights due to Neuropathy pain, share this blog with them!
